Biography

Dr. Mauricio Villamar is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and a Clinician Educator at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He received his medical degree with highest honors from Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador and has a diverse clinical background, having worked as a physician in the Amazon rainforest. Dr. Villamar completed a research fellowship in non-invasive brain stimulation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. He graduated from the University of Kentucky's neurology residency program and has received multiple research and teaching awards, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. His fellowships include epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, also associated with Harvard Medical School. Dr. Villamar, who joined Brown University in 2020, is board-certified in neurology specializing in epilepsy, and he is a fellow of several prestigious organizations including the American Academy of Neurology and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. His research interests encompass hospital neurology, epilepsy, EEG, medical education, global neurology, and quality improvement in hospital processes. He has received numerous grants and awards for his clinical research initiatives and continues to excel as a medical educator. In addition to English, Dr. Villamar is fluent in Spanish.
