Biography

Professor Mauricio Villarroel leads the Laboratory for Computational Medicine Technology (LCMT), which focuses on improving the efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of clinical decision-making in high-income countries (HICs) and low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). Born in Bolivia, he completed his undergraduate degree in engineering and obtained his doctoral degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford. He worked as a research scientist in the Health Sciences Technology (HST) department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and collaborated with multidisciplinary teams across academia, hospitals, and major medical companies in Europe to develop advanced monitoring algorithms. After joining the University of Oxford as a post-doctoral research assistant, he became a Senior Researcher in Digital Health. Maurico's research includes the development of non-contact video-based physiological monitoring technologies and personal health biomarkers aimed at improving patient well-being. He has also founded a spinout company, OxeHealth, and leads a research group focused on cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, early detection, and chronic condition management. Additionally, Mauro is involved with the Podium Institute for Youth Sports Medicine, working on technologies to monitor sports injuries in young athletes.
