Dr. Mauricio Villarroel

Biography

Mauricio Villarroel is a professor at the University of Oxford, where he leads the Laboratory for Computational Medicine Technology (LCMT). His primary focus is on enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of clinical decision-making in both high-income and low-middle-income countries. Originally from Bolivia, Mauro completed his undergraduate degree in engineering and earned a doctoral degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford. He has served as a research scientist in the Health Sciences and Technology (HST) department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and collaborated with various multidisciplinary teams in academia, hospitals, and the industry to devise advanced monitoring algorithms aimed at improving clinical decision-making, particularly in intensive care settings. His research encompasses the development of non-contact video-based physiological monitoring technologies and personalized biomarkers to enhance patient health and quality of life. Furthermore, his work has led to the establishment of a spinout company, OxeHealth, based on his early research. Mauro is also involved in training future leaders in digital health technologies, focusing on areas such as traumatic injuries and psychological factors contributing to athlete injuries.
