Biography

Maurits Kaptein is an active researcher in statistics, statistical learning, and research methodology. His work has focused on sequential experimentation, multi-armed bandit problems, and the methodology of causality. In recent years, Maurits has been exploring relationships within the streams of causal inference literature. His research activities include being the co-founder and CEO of Scailable, a company that develops an edge AI deployment SDK that successfully helps in choosing the right level of abstraction. In terms of academic background, Maurits obtained an MSc in economic psychology from the University of Tilburg, followed by a PdEng in User-System Interaction from the Technical University of Eindhoven. He earned his PhD in Industrial Design from the Technical University of Eindhoven, which was in joint affiliation with Stanford University in Communications. Maurits went on to become a post-doctoral researcher in quantitative marketing at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, and served as an assistant professor in AI at Radboud University Nijmegen, ultimately becoming an associate and then a full professor of statistics at the University of Tilburg. He currently holds the chair in applied causality at TU/e, contributing to research in causality, supervising PhD students, and actively engaging with TRI-DSA.
