Biography

Maurizio Porfiri is an Institute Professor and the Interim Chair of the Civil and Urban Engineering Department at New York University Tandon School of Engineering. He is also the Director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress and the Urban Institute. Dr. Porfiri has been a faculty member in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department since 2006, where he founded the Dynamical Systems Laboratory. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech in 2000 and 2006, respectively, and holds a Laurea in Electrical Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome (with honors). His research focuses on complex systems, public health, robotics, and their applications, with over 400 publications including works in prestigious journals such as Nature and Physical Review Letters. Dr. Porfiri has received numerous accolades, including the ASME Fellow and IEEE Fellow designations, as well as several awards for his contributions to engineering and education, such as the National Science Foundation CAREER award and the Outstanding Young Alumnus award from Virginia Tech.
