Dr. Maurizio Viroli

Biography

Maurizio Viroli is a Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin and holds a PhD in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute in Florence. His academic interests include history of political thought, classical republicanism, and the works of notable philosophers such as Niccolò Machiavelli and Jean Jacques Rousseau. Viroli has taught at various prestigious institutions including Cambridge University, Georgetown University, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is also known for founding the Master’s program in Civic Education in Italy and advising on cultural activities during the presidency of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Viroli has published extensively on republicanism and political theory, featuring works from foundational ideas to contemporary interpretations. His contributions span from examining the intersection of politics and religion to analyzing civic education within Italian schools, advocating for a well-informed citizenry.
