Dr. Mauro Calcagno

Biography

Mauro Calcagno is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music. His work encompasses musicology and cultural theory, focusing on opera studies, early modern music, performance studies, critical theory, and digital humanities. He received his Ph.D. in Music from Yale University in 2000 and has taught at Harvard University in 2008 and Stony Brook University in 2013. His publications include the book 'From Madrigal Opera: Monteverdi's Staging Self,' essays on early opera forthcoming in the Journal of the American Musicological Society, and critical essays on seventeenth-century music in the Journal of Musicology, for which he received the Alfred Einstein Award from the American Musicological Society. Calcagno's edition of Cavalli's Eliogabalo is forthcoming from Baerenreiter, and he has been featured in the New Yorker for his research during a New York City production. He has also offered workshops for singers and instrumentalists at esteemed institutions such as Juilliard and Bienen School of Music. As co-director of the Marenzio Online Digital Edition (MODE), funded by an NEH grant, he has edited extensive perspectives on Luca Marenzio's secular music. Calcagno currently supervises dissertations on varied topics, teaches doctoral seminars in critical theories of opera and Baroque music, and directs activities in the Music Department. He was also the Undergraduate Chair from 2015 to 2021.
