Biography

Maurus Reinkowski has been a professor at the University of Basel since 2010. He studied at LMU Munich, Bogazici University in Istanbul, and the University of Vienna. Following a fellowship at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute from 1995 to 1996, he worked as a consultant at the Orient-Institut Istanbul from 1996 to 1998. From 1998 to 2004, Reinkowski was an assistant at the University of Bamberg. Between 2004 and 2010, he held a position at the University of Freiburg in Breisgau, where he was a Senior Fellow at the School of History at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies from 2008 to 2010. He has been a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 2010 and was a guest professor at Sabanci University in Istanbul in fall 2015. His work focuses on the Republic of Turkey, the Ottoman Empire, Palestine during the late Ottoman period, conversion and crypto-religiosity, nationalism and minorities in the Middle East, conspiracy theories, and customary law.
