Dr. Mavis Morton

Biography

Mavis Morton is an Associate Professor in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences at the University of Guelph, specializing in Criminal Justice, Public Policy, and Social Practice. Her research interests primarily focus on critical community-engaged scholarship, particularly concerning issues of gender-based violence, intimate partner violence (IPV), and media representation of violence. Dr. Morton engages rigorously in the study of Ontario's family law system, housing insecurity, and the impacts of homelessness on marginalized populations. Her scholarly activities encompass teaching, learning, and research in community-engaged teaching and learning (CETL). Throughout her career, she has emphasized the importance of restorative justice and advocacy in the context of social justice issues. Dr. Morton is committed to advancing understanding and solutions for gendered violence and has supervised numerous graduate students, guiding them through their research in critical community engagement. Her contributions have been recognized through various awards, including the John Bell Award from the University of Guelph and a Teaching Award of Distinction from the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA).
