Biography

Max Bouttell is an architectural historian whose work is deeply rooted in the exploration of abstract ideas as they manifest in architecture and urban design. Awarded the NWO's PhDs Humanities grant for the period 2024-2029, he focuses on writing a social history of English neo-avant-garde architecture during the second half of the 20th century. His research particularly delves into the artistic, scientific, and political ideas that have shaped architects' thoughts and practices, as well as how architects, in turn, have influenced debates across various fields. By examining the history of ideas as a medium of architecture, his current project seeks to understand the life and legacy of English counterculture through sin centers, fun palaces, and free zones. He is a member of the Department of History and the Science and Technology Studies research cluster and has an academic background in philosophy, political theory, and international relations. Beyond academia, Bouttell has a diverse career history that includes working as an antique dealer, a postman, and in a brewery, showcasing the breadth of his experiences alongside his scholarly pursuits.
