Fr Max Kramer studied Classics at the University of Oxford before moving to the University of Cambridge to study Theology, specializing in the Hebrew Bible. At Cambridge, he taught Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and the Hebrew Bible, developing an interest in the world of Hellenistic Judaism. In 2016, he, along with Dr Max Leventhal, established a research seminar at Cambridge titled 'Jewish: Writing Greek', aimed at encouraging discussions among Classicists and Theologians interested in the literary aspects of ancient Greek texts written by Jews. This initiative culminated in an international conference in 2017. His research focuses on the Exagoge of Ezekiel the Tragedian, a 2nd century BCE Greek tragedy telling the story of Exodus, of which 269 lines survive. His work explores the poetics of the play and the ways in which the text examines issues of literary affiliation, culture, and identity. Fr Max broadly explores ancient Jewish-Greek texts as literary works and has written for a broader audience on Biblical, liturgical, and musical topics. He is also the author of a popular book on prayers and a contributor to an academically-informed Bible Study Series. He has served in ministerial roles in various Parishes and Churches, including as Precentor at Canterbury Cathedral, and has returned to Oxford as Chaplain and Welfare Fellow at Keble College.
