Biography

Max Parsons is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington, where he also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Physics. His research focuses on harnessing quantum mechanical systems to develop hardware for computing, communication, and sensing. His current projects include scaling neutral atom quantum computers and exploring novel optical control techniques. Max completed his PhD in 2016 at Harvard University under the supervision of Markus Greiner, where he developed techniques for laser cooling and atom-resolved imaging of fermionic lithium atoms in optical lattices for quantum simulation experiments. Prior to his tenure at the University of Washington in 2022, he was a scientist at Reality Labs (Meta), where he worked on augmented reality display systems and developing gate-based quantum computers based on arrays of neutral atoms trapped with optical tweezers. He holds over 35 patents in the fields of mixed reality and quantum computing.
