Biography

Max Telford is a Professor of Zoology at University College London, specializing in Genetics, Evolution, and Environment. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford in 1993 and has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the same institution, obtained in 1989. Telford conducted postdoctoral research at the Université de Paris Sud in Paris and later spent six years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Natural History Museum in London. In 2000, he was awarded the Wellcome Trust Research Career Development fellowship and began his academic career at the Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge. He joined University College London in 2003 as a Lecturer in Zoology, was promoted to Reader in 2006, and became a Professor in 2009. Telford was appointed as Jodrell Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy in 2019 and established the Centre for Life's Origins and Evolution (CLOE), where he served as director from 2017 to 2025. He has authored a book titled 'The Tree of Life: Solving Science's Greatest Puzzle,' set to be published in the UK in April 2025 and in the USA in November 2025.
