Biography

Max Metlitski is an associate professor in the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a condensed matter theorist primarily focused on correlated quantum matter. Over the past years, his research interests have included topological phases, quantum Hall states, and topological insulators, which exhibit novel excitations with non-trivial quantum numbers and braiding statistics. His investigations into these states of matter have provided insights into historically long-standing problems, including the exotic metallic state observed in quantum Hall fluids. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics in 2003, followed by a Master of Science in Physics in 2005 from the University of British Columbia, Canada. He obtained his PhD in Physics from Harvard University in 2011 and subsequently held a postdoctoral position at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara until 2015. Metlitski joined MIT's faculty in January 2017 and previously held an appointment at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada. He was awarded the New Horizons Prize for Early-Career Achievement in Physics in 2020 for his contributions to understanding topological states of matter.
