Biography

Maximilian Sternberg received his PhD in History and Philosophy of Architecture in 2007 from the Department of Architecture at Cambridge University. He has held post-doctoral scholarships in Paris and Rome before returning to Cambridge. In 2009, he was appointed as a university lecturer in the Department of Architecture. Currently, he serves as a fellow at Pembroke College and is the deputy director of the Centre for Urban Conflicts Research. His research interests include the appropriations of past and modern architecture, particularly the intersection of images from the Middle Ages and Modernism. He is involved in investigating social meanings associated with architecture from the Middle Ages, focusing on the interplay between religious reform and monastic architecture within urban environments. Sternberg's work extends into urban studies, addressing issues within regions such as Israel-Palestine, North Africa, and the Polish-German border towns, exploring how urban change and politics influence heritage practices. He oversees multiple PhD students engaged in various architectural research themes.
