Biography

Maxwell Fung, M.D. is a board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist with over 20 years of experience in academic medicine and full-time practice. He has dedicated his career to patient care, interpreting skin biopsy specimens as a dermatopathologist and evaluating patients in the clinic. Dr. Fung’s clinical interests focus on the evaluation and management of complex skin conditions, particularly those that defy conventional classification. His original research aims to improve diagnostic accuracy and communication between practicing dermatologists and dermatopathologists. He collaborates with world-class scientists on basic research topics such as galectin-3 and comparative transcriptomics. Born and raised in Sacramento, Dr. Fung graduated from Stanford University and went on to earn his M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. After completing an internship in internal medicine and his dermatology residency at UCSF, he pursued a fellowship in dermatopathology at Cornell University Medical Center. He has served as an assistant professor at the University of Connecticut and has directed a Multi-Disciplinary Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic. Dr. Fung has received multiple teaching awards and is an active member of several medical societies. He has published numerous original manuscripts and textbook chapters, enjoys lecturing at various dermatology meetings, and participates in mentoring future dermatopathologists.
