Biography

Maxwell J. Smith, PhD, MSc, is an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, and co-director of Western’s Health Ethics, Law, and Policy Lab. His research primarily focuses on public health ethics, examining the ethical dimensions involved in the pursuit of health equity. Smith also contributes as a consulting clinical bioethicist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He holds additional appointments in the Department of Philosophy, Rotman Institute of Philosophy, and the Centre for Research on Health Equity and Social Inclusion. His academic work emphasizes normative empirical understandings of health equity, social justice, and public health values, integrating health policy and ethics into his studies. Smith is dedicated to using empirical ethics methodologies in qualitative health research, as well as exploring the ethical implications of infectious disease policies through a cross-sectoral systems thinking approach.
