Dr. May Sudhinaraset

Biography

Dr. May Sudhinaraset is a distinguished Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Fielding School of Public Health. She is a trained social epidemiologist with previous experience at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research primarily addresses the social determinants of health, particularly focusing on migrant, adolescent, and women’s health globally. Dr. Sudhinaraset’s work aims to understand the cultural contexts that influence vulnerable populations, especially women and adolescents. Her projects include the BRAVE Study (Bridging communities Raising API Voices health Equity), which seeks to assess health statuses and utilization of healthcare services among undocumented young adults of Asian Pacific Islander descent. Additionally, her collaborations span across various countries including Kenya, India, Myanmar, and Thailand, analyzing women's experiences surrounding childbirth and access to reproductive health services. Throughout her career, she has earned recognition for her commitment to public health and health equity, being named a Changemaker by the Family Planning Society. Her research interests encompass global sexual and reproductive health, maternal health, family planning, the social determinants of health, and the impact of social policies on immigrant youth and Asian Pacific Islanders.
