Biography

Maya Feile Tomes grew up in London and spent fifteen years in Cambridge, where she studied Classics and specialized in Hispanic literary culture. She took on the role of Lecturer in Spanish at Murray Edwards College and has been involved in Classics as an Affiliated Lecturer. Her research focuses on Latin American literature from the colonial period (15th to 18th century), and she investigates the textual culture that developed in the Atlantic, especially how literature reflects interactions among materials, ideas, and individuals within a transatlantic context. This allows her to combine interests in early modern studies, comparative Iberian studies, and classical receptions, delving into the postcolonial repercussions of these fields. Maya's work has included significant publications such as 'Brill's Companion to Classics in the Early Americas' and 'Sepúlveda and the Spanish Invasion of the Americas'. Her current project involves a neo-Latin epic poem from the 18th century Jesuit period in Catalonia and Paraguay, in collaboration with Dr. Bram van der Velden from the University of Groningen. She has extensive experience as a translator and medical interpreter and is a founding member of the Cambridge Translation Studies Network. Prior to her appointment at Glasgow in January 2025, Maya held a visiting position at the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) in Curitiba, Brazil, and has lived in Argentina, Spain, and Belgium, with additional time spent in cities like Siena and Santiago de Chile.
