Maysa Martins is a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History and the Center for Latin American Visual Studies (CLAVIS) at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary art within the Black Atlantic, centering on the production of self-taught artists and examining vernacular aesthetic strategies. She explores the role of Afro-Atlantic religious and spiritual traditions in the artistic and political modernities of Brazil, Jamaica, and Angola. Her dissertation considers the work of Arthur Bispo do Rosário, Lee Scratch Perry, and Paulo Kapela, investigating the plethora of sacred and ordinary objects that provide insights into the micro and macro histories of the Atlantic. Additionally, Maysa is a 2024-26 curatorial fellow at the Visual Arts Center at UT Austin and has been an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Modern Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum for 2023-2024. She has previously worked as an educator at Museu Afro Brasil Emanoel de Araújo. Maysa received her M.A. in Art History from UNIFESP in São Paulo in 2021 and her B.A. in Visual Arts from UNESP in São Paulo in 2015.
