Biography

Professor Mechele Dickerson is a nationally recognized scholar in consumer credit law. Her current research focuses on the financial challenges faced by the American middle class, particularly in relation to consumer over-indebtedness and the ongoing housing crisis. She is dedicated to enhancing the learning experience in the law classroom and was honored as the recipient of the Texas Exes Faculty Teaching Award for excellence in teaching in 2007. Dickerson began her tenure at the University of Texas School of Law in January 2006. She holds a J.D. and a B.A. from Harvard University. After graduating from law school, she clerked for Judge Nathaniel R. Jones of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and practiced law in Washington, D.C., and Norfolk, Virginia. In 1995, she joined the faculty at William & Mary School of Law, where she served as the Cabell Research Professor of Law from 2003 to 2004. Throughout her career, she has received various accolades including the Alumni Fellowship Award in 2000 and the Walter L. Williams, Jr. Teaching Award in 1998 and 2005. Additionally, she is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the American Bar Association.
