Biography

Mechthild Leutner is an Emeritus Professor of modern Chinese state, society, and culture at the Department of East Asian Studies, Free University of Berlin, and Director of the Confucius Institute at the same university. She studied Sinology and History in Bochum and Beijing. Leutner has been an honorary doctoral degree holder from the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2002 and is an honorary visiting professor at Peking University and the Faculty of History at Nanjing University. Her research interests include the modern history of China and contemporary history, focusing on social history, women’s history, and German-Chinese relations. Leutner has authored and edited numerous publications, examining aspects from Marxist historical scholarship in the 1930s and 1940s to Sino-German cultural exchanges. She has been involved in various academic committees, particularly in the Society for Asian Studies, and is known for her extensive academic work in the field of Sinology and Chinese history research.
