Biography

Mechthild Pohlschroder is a distinguished faculty member in the Biomedical Graduate Studies at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Muenster, Germany in 1989, and earned a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1994. Her research focuses on Prokaryotic Cell Surface Biogenesis, particularly in archaea and bacteria. She studies the complex cell envelopes that provide barriers to protect the cytoplasm and the associated proteinaceous structures that ensure cell stability, facilitate motility, and mediate adherence to biotic and abiotic surfaces. Notably, her lab utilizes the model archaeon Haloferax volcanii and employs a variety of molecular biology techniques, including RNA sequencing, to characterize unique aspects of archaeal cell surface biology.
