Biography

Megan Ming Francis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on American politics, with particular attention to criminal punishment, Black political activism, and philanthropy in the post-Civil War South. Francis is the author of the award-winning book, 'Civil Rights: Making Modern American State', and is currently engaged in several book projects. One examines the role of the criminal punishment system in rebuilding Southern political and economic power after the Civil War, while another explores the history and future of philanthropy's complex relationship with social movements. Francis is a proud alumnus of Seattle Public Schools, Rice University in Houston, and Princeton University, from which she received both her M.A. and Ph.D. in Politics.
