Biography

Meghan Tinsley joined the Department of Sociology at the University of Manchester in September 2018. She received her PhD from Boston University in 2018. She holds an MSc in Race, Ethnicity, and Postcolonial Studies from the London School of Economics (2010) and a BA in International Relations from Wellesley College (2007). Tinsley has held visiting fellowships and engaged in research collaborations with the University of Cambridge, University of Melbourne, and University of Ghana, Legon. Her research intertwines themes of nationalism, memory, and empire, addressing subjects such as contesting statues, imperial nostalgia, and decolonizing museums. Her work has been published in several international sociological journals, including Memory Studies, Current Sociology, and Critical Sociology. Her book, "Commemorating Muslims in the World War Centenary: Making Melancholia" (Routledge), explores the dynamics of collective identity in post-imperial, multicultural nations. Currently, she is involved in a project focusing on the memorialization of anti-colonial struggles and constructing postcolonial nations through qualitative mixed methods. Tinsley is a convenor of the Decolonial Reading Group and a co-founder of the British Sociological Association’s Postcolonial and Decolonial Transformations Study Group. She also serves on the Editorial Boards of Sociology and Sociological Review.
