Biography

Meghana Ranganathan is a glaciologist interested in ice sheet dynamics and the role of the cryosphere in the climate system. She is set to join the University of Chicago's Department of Geophysical Sciences in 2024 after serving as a NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Fellow, hosted by the Georgia Institute of Technology. She earned her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. Her research primarily focuses on understanding how the largest source of uncertainty in sea-level rise projections, the Earth's ice sheets, respond to climate change. A significant aspect of her work is dedicated to the microphysical processes that occur within glaciers and ice sheets and their macroscale interactions with the climate system. Ranganathan employs an interdisciplinary approach that integrates materials science, solid earth geophysics, and applied mathematics to enhance the understanding of the physical processes that influence the dynamics of ice flow and fracture, ultimately aiming to improve the fidelity of ice sheet models and projections of sea-level rise.
