Biography

Mehmet Kurt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington. He received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, and completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the University of Washington in 2022, he served as an Assistant Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology. His research focuses on biological and biomedical challenges, particularly in the areas of brain biomechanics, neuromechanics imaging, and nonlinear systems. He has conducted various research projects, such as investigating nonlinear dynamics of human brain head impacts, studying the stability of aneurysms, and measuring brain tissue stiffness using ultra-high resolution MR elastography in Alzheimer's Disease. Mehmet's research has garnered recognition and awards including the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Postdoctoral Fellowship and the NSF Scientific Visualization Award. He actively engages in initiatives to increase participation and visibility of LGBTQ+ students in STEM disciplines and is involved in mentorship and outreach programs.
