Dr. Meir Amor

Biography

Meir Amor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University, holding a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the interdependencies and interconnectedness of status, inclusion, exclusion, and violence through a historical-comparative lens. He argues that the contradictory tendencies created by citizenship and racialization processes play a crucial role in defining modernity and the modern state. His studies examine the dark sides of enlightenment ideas and modern democracy, highlighting the recurrent emergence of violent eruptions and their sociopolitical implications. Amor's work takes a close look at the diverse paths of modernity in societies, focusing on settings such as 15th-century Catholic Spain, Ottoman Turkey, the United States, France, Germany, and Uganda, as well as the historical and contemporary realities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has contributed numerous peer-reviewed publications in distinguished journals and books, emphasizing themes of state violence, racialization, and citizenship.
