Biography

Mel Martin joined the performance faculty at Western University in 2005, bringing a wealth of experience as one of Ontario's most sought-after teachers. He has held the position of Section Violinist with the London Symphonia (formerly Orchestra London) since 1981, serving as Concertmaster and Assistant Concertmaster, and has been a featured soloist on numerous occasions. Additionally, Mel is a member of the Stratford Festival Orchestra, where he has been involved in various roles, including Concertmaster and stage musician. In the realm of chamber music, he has collaborated with Stratford Summer Music and has performed solo chamber music recitals across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Among his notable students is Francis Chaplin from Brandon University, who became one of the youngest members of the National Youth Orchestra. Mel earned his Bachelor’s degree in performance from Indiana University under the instruction of James Buswell and Franco Gulli, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of Michigan, studying with Paul Makanowitzky and Charles Avsharian.
