Biography

Melanie Blokesch holds a PhD degree from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Germany, completed in 2004. She undertook a postdoctoral stay at Stanford University (USA) in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Melanie joined EPFL as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in 2009 and was promoted to Associate Professor (tenured) in 2016, and then to Full Professor in 2021. She is currently serving as the director of the Global Health Institute at EPFL since 2022. In addition, she was nominated as a Research Councillor for the Swiss National Science Foundation from 2019-2025, and has held positions on various committees within the foundation. Melanie has been recognized for her scientific contributions by being elected to prestigious institutions, including the European Academy of Microbiology and the European Molecular Biology Organization. Her research interests focus on the evolution of bacteria, horizontal gene transfer, and host-pathogen interactions, among others. She has received numerous awards, including the ERC Starting Grant in 2012 and the Teaching Award from EPFL. As an educator, she has supervised various PhD students in the field of infection biology.
