Dr. Melanie Bonner

Biography

Melanie Jean Bonner is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University and holds multiple positions including Assistant Dean for Student Services and Professor of the Practice of Psychology and Neuroscience. Her academic career emphasizes the intersection of cognitive functioning and health in children with various illnesses, particularly those affecting the central nervous system. Dr. Bonner's current research focuses on evaluating and remediating cognitive function in children with sickle cell disease and those undergoing treatment for pediatric tumors, as well as improving adherence to medication regimens. She has been involved in significant multi-center projects aimed at assessing cognitive functioning and quality of life among children with disease. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, awarded in 1995. She is an active member of the Duke Cancer Institute and has contributed to multiple important grants and training initiatives to support pediatric cancer patients.
