Dr. Melanie Giles

Biography

Melanie Giles is a Professor of European Prehistory at the University of Manchester. Her academic journey began with a BA in Archaeology and an MA in Landscape Archaeology from the University of Sheffield, where she developed expertise in Iron Age studies. She later consolidated her knowledge with a PhD focused on Iron Age landscapes in East Yorkshire. Over the years, Professor Giles has taught at various institutions, including the Department of Archaeology at University College Dublin and the Department of Archaeology & Ancient History at the University of Leicester. Her research interests encompass Iron Age histories, funerary archaeology, and the social significance of grave goods, with a particular focus on the environmental and ritual importance of 'bog bodies'. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates ethno-archaeological theories to investigate the interplay between human history and material culture. Current projects include the Grave Goods Project and continuing research on Iron Age weapon burials. Professor Giles has received recognition for her work, including the Archaeology Book Year Award in 2022. She is also an active participant in professional activities and has contributed to various conferences and workshops in the field.
