Biography

Melanie C. Hawthorne is a professor at Texas A&M University in the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on nineteenth and twentieth-century French literature, with a special emphasis on prose fiction from the 'Decadent' period and women writers of that era. She is currently engaged in several projects related to the works of Anglo-French writer Renée Vivien (Pauline Tarn), exploring her contributions and the nuances of her literature. Hawthorne's work involves a deep appreciation for the complexity of Vivien's poetry and prose, which captures universal human experiences using unique perspectives. Additionally, she is working on a project to republish Vivien's work through French publisher ErosOnyx and completing a book about Vivien's life and the influence of Japanese art on her work. Hawthorne teaches courses primarily in the French curriculum, focusing on intermediate language skills and literature. She has also taught courses in Women’s Studies and associated disciplines at both Texas A&M University and the University of Michigan.
