Dr. Melanie Manion

Biography

Melanie Manion is the Vor Broker Family Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science at Duke University. She studied philosophy and political economy at Peking University in the late 1970s and received her training in Far Eastern studies at McGill University as well as the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Manion earned her doctorate in political science from the University of Michigan. Her research primarily focuses on contemporary authoritarianism and includes empirical work on bureaucracy, corruption, and trust in governance. She has been recognized for her contributions to the understanding of political trust, particularly in relation to governance failures and corrective efforts employed by governments in the face of crises. As a scholar, she has published works exploring the dynamics of political behavior and the impact of institutionalized rent seeking in non-democracies. Manion's expertise is founded on extensive literature and analysis in these critical areas of political science.
