Mélanie Pétrémont is a doctoral student and teaching assistant in the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Geneva since September 2016. She obtained a master's degree in sociology from the University of Geneva, focusing her thesis on Marian apparitions and urban space in Fátima, Portugal. Additionally, she earned a master's degree in philosophy from Paris 8 University – Vincennes Saint-Denis, with a thesis on life and resistance based on the works of Georges Canguilhem, Michel Foucault, and Judith Butler. She was a visiting scholar at CRIA (Centre for Research in Anthropology) at the University of Lisbon in fall 2020. Her doctoral research, supervised by Professor Jean-François Staszak (University of Geneva) and Professor Philomena Essed (Antioch University), examines everyday racism and the use of humor in the theatrical performances of Black female comedians in Europe, based on ethnographic case studies in Switzerland and Portugal. She has collaborated on various research projects in philosophy and epistemology of life sciences, sociology of social movements, and anti-Black racism in Switzerland. Her research interests include Black studies, Black feminism, decolonial and postcolonial theories, cultural studies, visual anthropology, social sciences epistemology, antiracisms, performance, and humor.
