Biography

Melanie Pilkington is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Chemistry at Brock University. Her research focuses on synthetic and structural inorganic chemistry, particularly the design and synthesis of novel magnetic materials and coordination complexes. The Pilkington group utilizes techniques such as X-ray crystallography, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetometry, and electrochemistry, underscoring the interdisciplinary nature of the research. Professor Pilkington's work aims to address key synthetic challenges in the field, tackling problems related to molecular materials chemistry. Her research interests encompass ligand synthesis, self-assembly approaches to create polynuclear metal ion arrays, and the development of dual property electronic magnetic materials. This is particularly challenging as it involves designing hybrid solids that possess both conductivity and magnetism. By applying principles of coordination chemistry, her group aims to develop new materials with unique physical properties. In addition to her research, she teaches various courses, including introductory and advanced inorganic chemistry, as well as X-ray crystallography and supramolecular chemistry.
