Biography

Melanie Schirmer studied mathematics at the University of Bonn and obtained her PhD in 2014 from the University of Glasgow. Following her PhD, she began her postdoctoral work at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where she became a computational scientist in 2018. Her research primarily focuses on the human microbiome, particularly in identifying microbial factors involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease and immune responses. In 2020, she returned to Germany to establish her independent research group at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). She has received several prestigious awards including the Emmy Noether Award in 2020 and the ERC Starting Grant in 2022, and is recognized as a highly cited researcher by Clarivate in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
