Biography

Melanie Soderstrom joined the University of Manitoba in 2008 and currently serves as the Head of the Department of Psychology. She is a Professor and holds significant roles, including serving as chair of the Senate Committee on Appeals. Her research focuses on the development of language in infants, employing both experimental methods to test infants' behavioral responses to speech sounds and observational methods to record and analyze infants' everyday language experiences. Soderstrom is active in the Open Collaborative Science movement in infancy research, and she serves on the board of ManyBabies, where she co-leads projects examining infants' preferences for infant-directed speech. Additionally, she is the co-director of the SSHRC-funded partnership “CONNECT,” which promotes large-scale collaborative research networks from the social sciences to enhance research strategies. She has also led the ACLEW project, creating new tools and resources to study infants' everyday language experiences across different cultures and languages.
