Biography

Melanie Wasserman is an Associate Professor of Economics at UCLA Anderson School of Management. Her research focuses on labor economics and the mechanisms that drive gender differences in educational and occupational outcomes in the labor market. Wasserman has explored the significant changes in women’s labor force participation over the past 40 years in the U.S. and the observed slow convergence in economic outcomes between men and women. Her work investigates the factors that contribute to persistent disparities in occupational choices and compensation between genders. Recent studies led by Wasserman have examined how non-monetary job attributes impact career decisions, including flexibility in work hours and the work environment, by analyzing responses to workplace policies across genders. She has a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT, obtained in 2016, and a B.A. in Economics from UC Berkeley in 2007. In her teaching role, she educates MBA students on Managerial Economics, integrating theoretical and empirical economic tools.
