Dr. Melanie Wiber

Biography

Melanie Wiber is a Professor Emerita at the University of New Brunswick, having joined the institution in 1987. She was awarded the title of Full Professor in Anthropology in 1995 and later became a Professor Emerita in 2019. Wiber’s research has prominently focused on economic legal anthropology, natural resource management, gender studies, local ecological knowledge, and risk assessment in property theory. Her fieldwork has included studies in the Philippines and Borneo, where she has engaged with diverse resources to support farming and fishing communities. Throughout her career, she has secured national and international research funding, including from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Wiber has collaborated extensively with various scholars and served as a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Germany. She has been involved in community-oriented research projects, including integrated coastal management studies. Wiber's notable publications range from edited volumes on legal pluralism to articles exploring the intersection of law, science, and technology in the context of fisheries and resource management. Her contributions to the field are recognized through numerous awards and a robust publication record, highlighting her expertise in legal anthropology and community-based management of resources.
