Melis Sutman is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. She primarily focuses on geostructures and their contribution to the sustainability of human activities while enhancing resilience to future climate change and energy-related challenges. Her research spans various topics, including in-situ and laboratory testing of soils, soil-structure interfaces under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions, and development of numerical tools for the analysis and design of geostructures. She completed her PhD at Virginia Tech in the United States and held a postdoctoral position at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, where she worked on Energy Geostructures Technology, innovating ways to utilize renewable energy resources through geothermal heat exchange within structural foundations. Currently, she researches abandoned mines for exploiting shallow geothermal energy for direct heating, cooling, and thermal energy storage. Her PhD work has received multiple awards including from the USUCGER and Geo-Institute ADSC. She is recognized for her outstanding contributions at EPFL and received the Bright Sparkle Award in 2023 from the ISSMGE.
