Melissa grew up in the western Canada prairies. After completing her B.Sc. (Hon) degree in geology at Brandon University, she obtained a M.Sc. in Geology from the University of New Brunswick, focusing her research on Li-Nb-Ta resources in Canada's far north. She began her work in modern oceanic environments by studying the formation of metal-rich hot springs, known as seafloor massive sulfide deposits, including black smoker chimneys. She completed her PhD in Geology at the University of Ottawa and spent time at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany. Her marine fieldwork includes research expeditions in the remote waters of the western Pacific, involving the use of autonomous remotely-operated vehicles to collect samples, geophysical data, and imagery from the seafloor. She joined the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto in August 2018 as an Assistant Professor of Economic Geology.
