Melissa (she/her) grew up in the prairies of western Canada. After completing her B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Geology at Brandon University, she obtained an M.Sc. in Geology from the University of New Brunswick, focusing on Li-Nb-Ta resources in Canada's far north. She began her research in modern oceanic environments studying the formation of metal-rich hot springs, known as seafloor massive sulfide deposits, from black smoker chimneys. She completed her PhD in Earth Sciences at the University of Ottawa and spent time at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in Germany. Her marine fieldwork involves extensive research expeditions to remote waters in the western Pacific, including Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Guam, Fiji, and Tonga, utilizing autonomous remotely-operated vehicles to collect samples, geophysical data, and imagery. Melissa joined the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto in August 2018 as an Assistant Professor specializing in Economic Geology.
