Biography

Professor Melissa Frydman joined the University of Illinois in April 2010 to develop and direct the new Family Advocacy Clinic, advocating for the rights of parents and children in juvenile abuse and neglect cases in Champaign County. In fall 2016, she was named Director of Clinical Education, overseeing the entire clinical program, including faculty and staff. Prior to her role at Illinois, she served as Acting Assistant Professor of the Lawyering Program at New York University School of Law for three years. Melissa has dedicated her career to advocating for children who cannot afford legal representation, focusing on providing direct legal services. She has represented children through various legal services organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area for seven years, and has held positions such as Senior Staff Attorney at the Dependency Project and Staff Attorney at Bay Area Legal Aid, working on youth legal matters involving foster care, guardianship, school discipline, special education, and immigration. She also incorporates an interdisciplinary approach by collaborating with social workers. Melissa earned her JD from Yale Law School and her BA with high honors in English from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Before law school, she taught elementary school in Compton, California, through the Teach for America program.
