Biography

Melissa Hines earned her S.B. in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984 and completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Stanford University in 1992. Following her doctoral studies, she conducted postdoctoral research at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey before joining the Cornell faculty in 1994. Throughout her career, she has been recognized with several accolades, including the 2014 Arthur Adamson Award for Surface Chemistry and being named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and the American Vacuum Society. She has also received the NSF Career Award and the Stephen and Margaret Russell Distinguished Teaching Award, along with being honored as a Weiss Presidential Fellow for her contributions to undergraduate education. Her research focuses on employing scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), surface spectroscopies, density functional theory (DFT), and Monte Carlo simulations to understand and control chemical reactivity at the nanoscale. Currently, her work is directed towards developing new approaches in sustainable nanocatalysis and photocatalysis using earth-abundant metal oxides under technologically relevant conditions.
