Biography

Melissa Lane is the Class of 1943 Professor of Politics at Princeton University and serves as the Director of the University Center for Human Values. She is an associated faculty member of the Department of Classics and the Department of Philosophy at Princeton. Her research focuses on history of political thought, with a special expertise in ancient Greek thought and normative political philosophy, particularly environmental ethics. She has authored several books, including 'Birth of Politics: Eight Greek and Roman Political Ideas That Matter' and 'Eco-Republic'. Lane has co-edited volumes on Greek and Roman philosophy and has held fellowships with organizations such as the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Joining the Princeton faculty in 2009, she previously taught at the University of Cambridge, where she was a Fellow of King’s College. She has received several accolades for her teaching, including the Phi Beta Kappa teaching prize in 2015.
