Biography

Melissa O'Donnell is a nationally and internationally recognized researcher in the field of child abuse and neglect. Her work utilizes linked government data from various Western Australian Departments including Health, Mental Health, Justice, Police, and Communities, as well as national data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. O'Donnell's research focuses on investigating and monitoring outcomes and risk and protective factors for children and families who experience child abuse and neglect, and on cases of injury. Her contributions have influenced national and state policy including the National Child Protection Framework and the development of the Youth Health Policy in Western Australia. Additionally, she provides expertise to the United Nations and is a member of the International Working Group on Child Maltreatment Data Collections under the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals established in 2015.
