Biography

Melissa Remis received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1994 and joined the faculty at Purdue University in 1996. Her research expertise lies in Biological Anthropology, focusing on themes such as Primate Ecology, Human Ecology, Nutrition, and Conservation Biology. In the late 1980s, Dr. Remis initiated field-based research on the behavioral ecology of Western gorillas in the Central African Republic. Presently, she engages in collaborative ecological and ethnographic research, emphasizing the intricate relationships between human and wildlife ecologies, diet, health, and the social impacts of the extractive industry on conservation in Central Africa. She has led numerous projects studying the evolution of feeding strategies in African apes through both fieldwork and research at zoological facilities. Over her academic career, Dr. Remis has authored and co-authored 38 articles in peer-reviewed journals, presented at national and international conferences, and contributed to edited volumes. Furthermore, she serves on editorial boards and is actively involved with grant agencies, including the National Science Foundation and Wenner-Gren Foundation. Dr. Remis has developed and taught various courses on Primate Ecology and Biological Anthropology at both graduate and undergraduate levels, and she has trained students in field research methodologies.
