Biography

Melissa E. Sanchez is the Donald T. Regan Professor in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is a core faculty member of the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies program. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine. Her research and teaching focus on feminism, queer theory, and 16th- and 17th-century literature. Currently, she is editing the Routledge Companion to Queer Literary Studies, and co-editing a collection titled 'All World Thee': LGBTQ+ Poetry from Homer to Hughes, which is under contract with Columbia University Press. She has authored several significant works, including 'Queer Faith: Reading Promiscuity, Race, and Secular Love Tradition,' which was awarded an honorable mention for the MLA Scaglione Prize in Comparative Literary Studies. This book reassesses key texts in the pre-history of modern monogamy from authors like Paul, Luther, Petrarch, and Shakespeare, aiming to articulate the complexities around desire and self-knowledge. Sanchez also explores early modern subjects in her previous publications, including 'Erotic Subjects: Sexuality and Politics in Early Modern English Literature' and edited volumes that contribute to the current discussions surrounding humanism and feminist studies of the early modern period. Her diverse teaching repertoire includes courses on queer theory, feminism, and literature from the Renaissance.
