Melody McKiver’s musical work integrates electronics into Western classical music, shaping a new genre of Anishinaabe compositions. A proud member of Obishikokaang Lac Seul Nation and the Mizi'iwe Aana Kwat (LGBTQ2S+ Council) of Anishinaabe Nation Treaty #3, Melody is a 2020 recipient of the Canada Council's Robert Flaming Prize, awarded annually to exceptionally talented young Canadian composers. As an assistant professor at the Desautels Faculty of Music, they focus on Composition, Orchestration, Perspectives on Indigenous Music, and Popular Songwriting. Melody has performed extensively across Turtle Island, showcasing talent at prestigious venues such as the National Arts Centre and the Toronto International Film Festival. Their collaborations include works with Polaris Prize winners and acclaimed filmmakers. They are known for a growing body of chamber and choral works and have received commissions from organizations like Soundstreams and Jumblies Theatre. Upcoming projects include a full-length album and a setting of a poem by Métis author Katherena Vermette.
